Affordable Finds | Large Area Rugs

I get asked frequently for affordable product recommendations, so I decided to make it a mini series here!

Today I’m tackling large area rugs (6’x9′ and larger). They can be very pricey! I’ve found that your best bet is to look at overstock stores and online, such as Home Goods, Overstock, or Rugs USA.

I’ve only purchased area rugs in-store at Home Goods, but I’d love to try Overstock or Rugs USA sometime. When purchasing rugs online, try searching several sites (preferably photos of the rug in people’s homes) to get a better idea of color and texture.

Here’s a few of my favorites all (except the bottom 2) are $300 or under (or close to) and 6’x9′ or larger.

Safavieh Moroccan Dhurrie  (gray version here) // Safavieh Sumak I included a close-up since it’s a smaller scale. I saw this at Home Goods and it’s gorgeous! // Mandara Handmade Flatweave Blue // Mandara Handmade Flatweave Orange //nuloom Moroccan Trellis Navy // Safavieh Moroccan Chatham // Safavieh Moroccan Shag // West Elm Jute Chevron

Here’s a quick tip for selecting a rug. The most common mistake is ordering a rug that is too small. To determine the correct size, make sure that at least the front two legs of all chairs, sofas, etc. are on the rug. When in doubt, go larger!
Have you purchased rugs online? If you needed to return, was it easy or a pain? If you have a favorite tip, I’d love it hear it!

Super helpful post, thank you! About to move next month so I'm looking for an affordable area rug! Affordable means non-commitance which I need!

I like Joss and Main for large cheap rugs, but it's impossible to find out the manufacturer and search for photos of the rug in other contexts, which is annoying because often there's only one or two pictures. But I've had good experiences with their customer service.

I've ordered a rug from RugsUSA before and while it took FOREVER to get to me (it was backordered, but RugsUSA threw in a free rug pad), the picture on the website was very accurate and I was pleased with the rug.

I've heard that shipping can take forever at RugsUSA, so I've been hesitant, but those sales make it hard to pass up!

I have bought 2 rugs from Rugs USA and been very happy with them. One was a 8×10 for $200 and the other was a 9×11 for $300- bought during a 70% off sale. http://www.rugsusa.com/rugsusa/rugs/rugs-usa-trellis-vs91/gold/200MTVS91A-2608.html The 9×11 one is really nice and exceeded my expectations. When it first arrived it was damaged so we had to send it back. Because it was damaged we didn’t have to pay to send it back and they scheduled UPS to pick it up, we just had to leave it outside which was super easy. Now if we had just decided we didn’t like it then it would have cost a good amount to send back, at least $50-100 and would not have been worth it to return. The high cost of returning held me back from ordering for awhile. Now I am glad I took the risk.

I love buying Target's outdoor rugs and using them inside. With two young kids who tend to track in dirt and spill an occasional drink or two, these rugs are perfect! They're easy to clean, have a pattern that's easy to work with and are very reasonably priced. Typically under $100.

Love them all. I look at rugs at least once or twice every week. I think I have a problem.

I purchased a rug from RUGS USA and when it arrived, the colour of the rug was completely different than shown on the website (light tan on the website, dark brown in real life). When I contacted customer service, I got some automated response saying "Dear customer", not even personalized to my name, and saying they wouldn't accept the return. When I responded, I complained about them using a generic cut-and-paste response and that the only reason I was returning was due to a discrepancy between advertised product and received product, they never contacted me again. I would never EVER order from them again… it is too risky to order a rug you've never seen in person from a website with terrible customer service, in my opinion and based on my experience.

I've purchased every single rug for our house from an online source, and thankfully, I haven't had to return any of them!!!

I do think returning online is a pain (and expensive!!) but it's still where I do most of my shopping. Love your picks here!

Thanks for these! I've been on the hunt for a larger rug for our living room! I fell in love with Rugs USA after seeing their sales but after following along with them, waiting for a big 70% off sale, I found out that every time they have a sale the adjust their "original" prices so basically no matter what the sale, you're always going to pay around the same amount for any rug (original prices higher for higher percentages off, lower for lower percentages.) I was bummed and have fallen out of love with them. Not a good business practice in my opinion. :/

I've also found that urban outfitters has a good selection of large area rugs at pretty reasonable prices! Love your picks!

I have to add to the list of comments about Rugs USA. I recently ordered a rug during one of the sales, and when it arrived, it was the wrong color. It didn't just appear differently in person than it did on the site — it was ACTUALLY the wrong color. I was told that my only option was to follow this procedure: 1) Send pictures of the rug and the labels to an email address to file a claim. 2) Wait for an email with the shipping label. 3) Use the pre-paid shipping label to send the rug back. 4) Wait for Rugs USA to receive the rug and confirm that it was the wrong product. 5) Receive a refund. 6) Re-purchase the same wrong that I originally ordered.
I asked what would happen if the rug was out-of-stock or no longer on sale by the time I got my refund. I was told that "these sales happen a lot, so it'll probably be OK." Great. This policy is just INSANE. I understand that they probably can't afford to send out a new rug without receiving the first one back — THAT is understandable to me. But I think it's crazy that they can't send me the correct product without me having to PURCHASE it again!
Sorry to ramble — I'm still just very frustrated! Since this experience, I've been reading a lot of other accounts of other customers having the same (or similar) issues. I wish I had known before I bought the rug, so I'm spreading the word now!
